How to build a sustainable solopreneur business

Many people believe that running a successful business requires a team of employees, an office, and years of experience.

However, this simply isn’t true. These days, anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit, a great idea, and internet access can start their own business.

In fact, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are over 28 million small businesses in the United States alone. 

But what if you don’t want to hire employees or rent office space? What if you want to keep your overhead low and run your business entirely on your own?

This is where solopreneurship comes in.

A solopreneur is someone who starts and runs their own business without any employees. And while it may seem like a daunting task, it is entirely possible to build a sustainable solopreneur business.

Here’s how:

Find Your Niche

The first step to building a sustainable solopreneur business is finding your niche. What are you passionate about?

What do you have experience in? What do you excel at?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect niche for your business. 

Remember, just because you’re a solopreneur doesn’t mean you have to go it completely alone.

There are plenty of online tools and resources available to help you get started, including books, blog posts, podcasts, and even online courses.

And once you’ve found your niche, there are endless opportunities for networking and connecting with other like-minded individuals. 

Create a Business Plan

After you’ve decided on your niche, it’s time to create a business plan. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy—a simple document outlining your goals, strategies, and financial projections will do just fine.

Having a written plan will not only help keep you organized and on track; it will also make it easier to secure funding from investors or lenders should you decide to pursue it. 

Start Marketing Your Business 

Now that you have a plan in place, it’s time to start marketing your business.

The good news is that thanks to the internet, there are countless free (or very affordable) marketing channels available to solopreneurs. social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram are excellent places to start promoting your business—and best of all, they’re free!

Other great marketing channels include email marketing (you can use platforms like MailChimp or Constant Contact to get started), content marketing (blogging), and search engine optimization (SEO). 

Don’t try to do everything yourself 

You might be used to wearing all the hats in your business, but as your company grows, you’ll need to start delegating tasks.

Trying to do everything yourself is not only unrealistic, but it’s also unsustainable—eventually, you’ll burn out.

Delegating tasks will not only help reduce your workload, but it will also give you more time to focus on the aspects of your business that you’re truly passionate about.  

Invest in professional help 

Speaking of delegating tasks, there will come a time when you need to invest in professional help. This could be anything from hiring an accountant to taking care of website maintenance.

The key is to identify the areas of your business that aretaking up too much of your time or causing you undue stress, and then find someone who can help take care of those things for you.  

Set aside money for taxes

One of the most common mistakes solopreneurs make is forgetting to set aside money for taxes. When you’re used to working for someone else, taxes are automatically deducted from your paycheck; as a solopreneur, though, it’s easy to forget that you need to pay taxes on your earnings.

To avoid any surprises come tax season, make sure you set aside at least 30% of every payment you receive into a separate account so you have the money when it comes time to pay Uncle Sam.  



Building a sustainable solopreneur business may seem like a daunting task, but it’s far from impossible.

By finding your niche, creating a business plan, and marketing your business effectively, you can achieve success as a solopreneur—just like millions of others have before you.
