3 Rules to Make Your Social Media Marketing Effective

If you are just starting to market your business on social media, ALL of the things to do and learn can get overwhelming! I boiled down the whole process into 3 rules to make your social media marketing effective.

AND, the beauty of these 3 rules is that they apply to ANY type of business, and ANY social media platform.

So let’s dive in!

Rule #1: Clearly show what you do or offer.

This seems like a “duh” statement, but let me tell you… it’s not!

Any person should be able to come to your social media page (or website for that matter!) and be able to tell within about 5 seconds what it is that you do.

Make your header photos descriptive of your business.

If you sell burgers, let’s see the burgers! If you are a realtor, show some beautiful homes. If you are a consultant, put up a clean graphic with text that clearly states what you do.

Your website, social media pages and marketing are NOT the places to get too cutesy and abstract. People scroll through social media at a lightening pace, and you need them to understand your purpose very quickly.

Rule #2: Show your personality.

Think about your very favorite blogs or social media pages. (I’m not talking about your friends’ and family’s pages.) Those celebrity pages, businesses or favorite bloggers that you love.

Chances are, their pages are OOZING with personality. That’s what drew you in to begin with. And that’s why you continue to come back to their page.

For example, I am a huge fan of The Pioneer Woman.

I have all of her cookbooks, (and make many of her recipes regularly!), love her show, love her blog. Basically we’re best friends.

Now, if she just posted dry, boring recipes online and called it a day, she would not have NEAR the following that she does! Her posts are filled with snark and sass. She writes about everything from cooking, to lipstick, to cows on the ranch.

And THAT’S why people love her. That’s why people come to her site in the first place.

How can you inject your social media pages with YOUR personality?

I am a firm believer that every single business can find a unique personality to showcase on social media. No matter what field you are in.

If you are marketing your business on your own, use your own personality! Write posts as you would actually talk to your good friend. This is how you will make your social media marketing effective!

If you are doing marketing as a part of a larger business, it’s time to do some thinking and planning. What is the tone of your business? Is it casual and fun? Is it informative? Is it dry and sarcastic?

Pick a tone, come up with some ideas, and start to post with your business’s “tone.”

You will find that you end up drawing the exact people to your pages that are the right fit for your business! When you showcase your unique personality, it simply clicks with the customers you most would like to have.

Rule #3: Be “attractive” to your people.

And no, I don’t mean your hair and makeup! You want everything about your social media pages to be drawing your customers in.

Now, following the first two rules above will go a long way in this area! But we are going to take it a little bit further.

Critically comb through all of the “static” information on your social media page.

For example, take a look at your “About” section. (on your social media page, or even your website!)

Oftentimes business owners want to use this space to talk about themselves. How the business got started. What their inspiration was. The history of the company.

**yawn**

Just sayin’.

In all honesty, no one cares about those things. There, I said it.

Anything you write in your About section should be filtered through this question: “What do my customers want?”

And then, you tailor your About section to demonstrate that you meet those needs. You have a process in place that relieves all of their fears. You are there for them, providing what they are looking for. THAT’s what you are About.

Critically look through every portion of your social media page and ask if this, here is attracting the customers you want to have.

As you start to filter everything you post and do on your social media pages through these 3 rules, you will be building a page that attracts the EXACT customers you are wanting to find.
